The Importance Of Patients Being Part Of The Decision-Making Process

x-rayWhen it comes making a decision about getting a dental or medical procedure done, having a variety of options to choose from is essential. To this point, there are times when we all have to see a physician, dentist or other health care provider for treatment. In times gone by, if we were sick we went to the doctor; the doctor consideredthe options available and then told the patient what must be done.

In present day, the situation is very different. Patients are now far better educated and have easier access to information. They are far more capable of contributing to the decision-making process about their health than they were in the past. Now, all healthcare professionals are obligated to make sure that their patients or patients’ legal guardians are made fully aware of all reasonable options for treatment, the risks and benefits of each option and the likelihood for success. This process is called ‘informed consent’. It is interesting to note that when one speaks with patients who have been dissatisfied with a healthcare provider, one of their most common complaints is that they felt uninformed.

If you are about to embark on a costly and/or extensive dental treatment, you should feel like you are well aware of your options. This is a process that should not feel rushed. You are entitled to answers to all your questions about all aspects of the various treatment options available. In addition to having the opportunity to speak with your dentist in person, you should also be directed to literature on paper or on a website to further guide and educate you. In cases relating to cosmetic dentistry, you should be provided with photographs of similar cases to give you an idea of as to what you can expect. Videos can also be very useful.

Here are a few dentistry-related examples where being knowledgeable about your choices is important:

What should I do about my abscessed tooth?
An abscessed tooth needs to be attended to, without question, or else very serious health risks are likely to result. There are two main options for treatment: 1) root canal treatment, which removes the infected tissue only and allows the tooth to be saved; or 2) removal of the whole tooth. There are situations in which either solution may be appropriate. A patient should be familiar with all the risks, benefits and costs of both options before making a decision.

What type retainer should I use after my braces come off?
There have never been more options for orthodontic retainers than there are today. Some types are bonded to the backs of front teeth. There are the more familiar removable types, which can now be made in many colours and patterns. A newer, vacuumformed retainer, commonly called an Essix appliance, is thin, clear and made of plastic. The company that makes Invisalign also has a new retainer product that is thin, clear and very strong. Having said that, retainers can be lost or easily forgotten about and left in a drawer, leaving teeth at risk of relapse. And, even if they are worn regularly, as strong and durable as they may be, it is my experience that clear retainers eventually wear out. That is why the Invisalign Vivera retainers come with included replacements that are changed on a scheduled basis. For many of my patients, a good option is a combination of both fixed and removable retainers.
