June 10 2020 Letter to Ortho Patients

June 10, 2020

To All Of Our Patients & Families Currently Undergoing Orthodontic Treatment,

You have probably already seen the letter I recently sent out to all of my patients. However, I am writing to you separately in that ortho patients are in an exceptionally unique situation these days due to Covid-19 – one that affects not only my patients, but those of all dental offices in Ontario, including Orthodontists.

As you may be aware, some offices in the province have already opened their doors. We plan to do the same, with our target date being July 20th. However, under the current regulations, hygienists’ roles are quite restricted. Dentists are regulated by the Royal College of Dentists of Ontario (RCDO) while Dental Hygienists are accountable to their own regulatory body, the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO). Unfortunately, both colleges’ regulations are very different right now. The hygienists’ College has currently imposed restrictions that are making it impossible for hygienists to work in most dental offices. As you know, dental hygienists are essential to all dental and orthodontic practices, including my own.

It is my hope that the two Colleges will work together soon to arrive at mutually compatible standards, which would in turn make it possible for all hygienists in Ontario to return to the work that they perform so well. In the meantime, my Hygienists and I are monitoring the situation closely and of course, I continue to make myself available to my patients to assist with any dental and orthodontic emergencies that may arise. When I actually return to the office, I will personally be hands-on with ortho adjustments and repairs myself and will be triaging the needs of all of my ortho patients accordingly.

The safety and wellbeing of my patients, my staff and all of our loved ones has been and remains my top priority with respect to any decision-making regarding my dental practice. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to chat.  I thank-you for your ongoing patience as we continue navigating these uncertain waters together. We look forward to seeing all of you soon. In the meantime, please stay safe.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steve Deskin
